Successes were also shared, as a lot has happened in 1.5 years of ESC. Fons Claessen and Vincent Pijnenburg zoomed in on several wonderful projects: the launch of a book, many events, and impressive research on air quality.
Then, students from Fontys Venlo University of Applied Sciences and RWTH Aachen University presented their research results. The crosslab students Peter Joe Rix, Fabienne Richter, Mariya Kuneva, Petar Bogdanov and Nina Lange from Fontys Venlo University of Applied Sciences shared their business plan to market equipment for better air quality in schools, elderly care, and businesses. Improving air quality enhances productivity and reduces illness.
The student Jonas Klügel (RWTH Aachen University) pointed out that a more holistic approach across policy mix and political strategies and stronger cooperation both along the value chain and cross-sectoral.
This was followed by two interesting workshops by Ronald Jansen and Martin Unfried.
We closed with a networking moment at the end of this inspiring day.

How can digital key technologies support sustainability? In this session you will particularly learn about the application of digital technologies as an enabler of the transition towards a Circular Economy (e.g. repair, reuse, recycling). One example is the HRW’s Circular Digital Economy Lab (CDEL) which combines artificial intelligence, robotics and other technologies to automize and improve e-waste recycling. Another example is the introduction of digital product passports in the EU for providing better sustainability information throughout the whole life cycle of relevant products such as batteries, textiles and steel.
Paul Szabó-Müller:
Paul Szabó-Müller is research associate at the Computer Science Institute of the Hochschule Ruhr West (HRW) in Bottrop, Germany. Based on his background in economic geography, his current research focus lies on the initiation and the management of a regional transition towards a Circular Economy in the Ruhr Area. He was/is project manager of several research projects such as Prosperkolleg, reWIR and #digital.zirkulär.ruhr, which deal with related topics such as community and network building, education, digitalization/twin transition, knowledge and technology transfer and sustainable/transformative structural change.

Week van de circulaire economie

Afgelopen dinsdag en woensdag organiseerde Fontys Hogeschool twee dagen vol informatieve en interactieve sessies in het kader van de #weekvandecirculaireeconomie.
Onze ESC en Fontys Venlo collega Ronald Jansen en zijn collega Patrick van Rooy hadden het genoegen om een divers publiek van ondernemers, overheid en Fontys Hogeschool collega’s mee te nemen in het doel, de kaders en de kansen van de CSRD-wetgeving, voortvloeiend uit de #eugreendeal.
Het was inspirerend om de interactie tussen de deelnemers te zien en te ervaren hoe steeds meer mensen constructief meedenken over hoe we de transitie naar een duurzame en circulaire economie vorm kunnen geven!
De sessies boden een diepgaand inzicht in de cruciale rol van de CSRD-wetgeving in het bevorderen van duurzaamheid en circulariteit binnen de Europese Unie. Deelnemers kregen de kans om te begrijpen hoe deze wetgeving van invloed kan zijn op hun organisatie en hoe ze zich hierop kunnen voorbereiden.
Al met al waren de twee dagen gevuld met waardevolle inzichten, boeiende discussies en concrete actiepunten voor een duurzamere toekomst. We kijken ernaar uit om de dialoog voort te zetten en samen te werken aan een circulaire economie die bijdraagt aan een betere wereld voor ons allemaal.
Sociaal onderzoek doen met technologie? Het kan!

Met technologie kun je ook sociaal onderzoek doen. Dat ondervond Informaticastudent Nicoleta Cazac. Ze deed een studie naar de luchtkwaliteit in drie Noord-Limburgse gemeenten. “Het was een hele nieuwe ervaring en het voelde erg goed om echt iets te kunnen betekenen voor mensen.”
Voor een zaal vol mensen gaf de derdejaarsstudent uit Moldavië onlangs haar eindpresentatie. In het Engels welteverstaan, ondersteund met Nederlandstalige sheets voor de oudere inwoners die het Engels niet geheel machtig zijn.
Spannend vond ze het, want in de zaal zaten niet zomaar mensen, maar inwoners van de drie gemeenten die vol verwachting de resultaten van haar onderzoek afwachtten, en vertegenwoordigers van bedrijven, overheden en instanties.
Een belangrijke bijeenkomst dus, die in het teken stond van de voortgang van het Limburgse project ‘Grenzeloos Meten’, waarbij Fontys Venlo en Fontys Green Tech Lab nauw betrokken zijn. Alle partijen werken samen om de luchtkwaliteit op lokaal niveau te meten, met speciale aandacht voor fijnstof en geur. De zorgen van burgers over hun gezondheid door bedrijvigheid – denk aan de landbouw, industrie en snelwegen – in hun omgeving vormden de aanleiding voor dit project.
Politiek beladen
Een behoorlijk politiek beladen onderwerp, weet Nicoleta, maar daar hoeft ze haar handen niet aan te branden. “Het is niet aan mij om conclusies te verbinden aan de metingen, maar wel om inzicht te geven in de opgehaalde data.” En dat deed ze op een manier die veel lof oogstte tijdens de bijeenkomst.
“Ik wilde de hoeveelheid fijnstof in de lucht zichtbaar maken, zodat iedereen het zou kunnen begrijpen. Daarvoor heb ik het principe van een hittekaart gebruikt.
Zo’n kaart laat met kleuren zien wat de gevoelstemperatuur is op een bepaalde plek. Donkerrood staat bijvoorbeeld voor heel heet en lichtblauw voor koel. Dat heb ik toegepast voor de hoeveelheid fijnstof in de lucht. Rood staat dan voor een slechte luchtkwaliteit en blauw voor een goede.”
Om de metingen te kunnen doen, zijn in september vorig jaar op dertig locaties bij burgers fijnstofmeters opgehangen die voortdurend data verzamelen. Nicoleta heeft deze gegevens geanalyseerd en ze visueel gemaakt. “Want fijnstof is zo klein dat je het niet of nauwelijks kunt zien”, zegt ze. “Hoe kleiner, hoe schadelijker voor onze gezondheid. Als we de luchtkwaliteit op een locatie willen weten, moeten we dus de hoeveelheid fijnstof meten.”
Kleurkaarten
Voor het onderzoek heeft Nicoleta zich gericht op PM10, fijnstof met een grootte tot 10 micrometer, zoals deeltjes zeezout, stof en rook. Niet heel klein, maar wel zo klein dat je niet met het blote oog kunt zien hoeveel van dit fijnstof in de lucht aanwezig is en of het schadelijk is. “Met de hittekaarten die ik heb gemaakt, kun je op één beeld zien of de hoeveelheid fijnstof op een bepaald moment voldoet aan de Europese richtlijnen.”
Door de beelden achter elkaar te zetten, krijg je een indruk van het fijnstof gedurende de dag. “Ik heb het zo gemaakt dat je door een tijdlijn scrolt. Per uur zie je dan de luchtkwaliteit ‘bewegen’ en zie je waar deze vandaan komt en naartoe gaat. Het is de bedoeling om een digitaal platform op te zetten waar mensen de hoeveelheid fijnstof in de lucht kunnen volgen, net zoals er al websites zijn voor weersvoorspellingen.”
Het uiteindelijke doel van het project is om te achterhalen of bepaalde concentraties fijnstof te wijten zijn aan lokale bronnen. Dit vereist echter nog aanvullend onderzoek. Het komende semester neemt een andere derdejaarsstudent Informatica, Maksym Kobzar, het stokje over van Nicoleta. Het onderzoek loopt nog tot en met juni.
Nieuwe ervaring
Nicoleta kijkt met tevredenheid terug op haar onderzoek. “Meewerken aan een werkelijk bestaand project was een hele nieuwe ervaring en het voelde erg goed om echt iets te kunnen betekenen voor mensen. Met technologie kun je dus heel goed sociaal onderzoek doen. Zeker tegenwoordig, er is zoveel technologie beschikbaar waar we gebruik van kunnen maken. Wat dat betreft leven we in een geweldige tijd.”

Afgelopen week vond een inspirerende en verhelderende Masterclass Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) plaats. De zaal bij de Rabobank in Sittard zat met circa 200 geïnteresseerden bomvol.
De Masterclass ging in op vragen als: ‘Wat is CSRD nu eigenlijk?’, Wat moet je volgends de Europese wetgeving inzichtelijk maken?’ en ‘Welke informatie gaan je klanten volgend jaar al aan je vragen?’. Dennis de Hoog, Circulariteit Consultant bij Volantis legde CSRD op een zeer begrijpelijke manier uit.
Daarnaast hielden Fabian Groven, Sustainability Manager bij EMMA Safety Footwear en Hans Houtappels, CEO van Moonen Packaging – B Corp™ inspirerende presentaties over duurzaamheid in hun bedrijf. Bekijk hier de aftermovie.
De ochtend zat boordevol tips en ideeën over hoe je ervoor zorgt dat CSRD nu al in je voordeel gaat werken. Eind maart en begin april vinden er verdiepingssessies plaats. Ondernemers krijgen dan de gelegenheid om samen met experts van onder andere het Euregional Sustainability Center en Fontys Venlo University of Applied Sciences in te gaan op deelaspecten van CSRD. De hoge opkomst bij de Masterclass is een duidelijk teken dat de behoefte aan informatie, kennis en praktische toepassing groot is. Het is ook een teken dat Limburg brede samenwerking mogelijk is om dit soort zaken aan te pakken.
Event Recap: European Green Deal – Sustainability requirements and opportunities for manufacturing companies

Yesterday, the cross-border event European Green Deal took place at TZN in Kempen. The event was organised by the ESC and its partners. The purpose of the afternoon was twofold. On the one hand, the focus was on knowledge sharing among Dutch and German entrepreneurs in the border region, and on the other hand, entrepreneurs received an extra boost and guidance on how to implement the CSRD guidelines and related legislation in their organizations. The afternoon kicked off with an activating and hopeful keynote by Bernd Meyer from Zenit GmbH. The workshop afternoon was filled with inspiration for new circular concepts and business models.
In breakout sessions led by workshop leaders, the following themes were discussed:
- Opportunities for circular production and circular business models
- Sustainable supply chains
- Companies in climate change – risk reduction through climate resilience
- EU taxonomy and financing
The event was another significant step in further strengthening the cross-border network and expanding the Euregional Sustainability Center.
Veranstaltung im Rückblick: „Circular Economy in der Region voranbringen“

Das Prosperkolleg durfte sich gemeinsam mit allen Gästen und Sprecher:innen über eine gelungene Veranstaltung am 30.11.2023 in der Lohnhalle in Bottrop freuen. Über vier Jahre Projektarbeit wurden in Vorträgen, Podiumsgesprächen und einer Ausstellung vorgestellt und gebührend gefeiert. Und das Wichtigste: Es wird mit neuen Projekten weitergehen.
Nach der Begrüßung durch den Moderator Mathis Trapp, Bottrops OB Bernd Tischler und die Gesamtprojektverantwortlichen Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Handmann und Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Irrek präsentierte das Prosperkolleg-Team Ergebnisse und Erkenntnisse aus der Zusammenarbeit mit Unternehmen, stellte Qualifizierungskonzepte zur Schulung von Beratenden vor und reflektierte die Arbeit des Forschungsaustauschs im Rahmen der Webseminarreihe #CEresearchNRW. Ergänzt wurden die Vorträge im moderierten Gespräch aus der Perspektive von Unternehmen, Netzwerk- und Projektpartner:innen und ehemaligen Mitarbeitenden, die von der Zusammenarbeit mit bzw. im Prosperkolleg berichteten. Das Team des Circular Digital Economy Labs rundete den ersten Teil mit der „Akkuschrauber-Story“ ab, die den innovativen KI-gestützten und robotisierten Zerlegeprozess von Elektroaltgeräten anschaulich vermittelte.
Der zweite Teil der Veranstaltung war dem Blick nach vorne gewidmet. Die Präsentationen von konkreten Folgeaktivitäten der Prosperkolleg-Partner und weiterer Akteure zeigten, dass das Thema Circular Economy auch über das Ende der aktuellen Projektlaufzeit des Prosperkollegs hinaus weiter von den bisherigen wie neuen Akteuren in der Region bespielt werden wird. Die beiden Regio.NRW-Vorhaben Circular Performer Emscher-Lippe und #digital.zirkulär.ruhr sowie CIRCLEUP (Horizont Europa) sollen Anfang 2024 starten. Ein Projekt zum „Circular Economy Management“ und weitere befinden sich in Planung. Zudem stellte Prosperkolleg sein Konzept für ein dezentrales Kompetenzzentrum CE.Hub.NRW vor.
Den Blick nach vorne richtete auch NRW-Wirtschaftsministerin Mona Neubaur in ihrer Video-Grußbotschaft, in der sie die Arbeit des Prosperkollegs lobte: „Die Ergebnisse des Prosperkollegs dienen auch als Grundlage, um die Kreislaufwirtschaftsstrategie Nordrheinwestfalens zu gestalten und die mittelständische Wirtschaft im Transformationsprozess zu unterstützen. Wir blicken heute also nicht auf das Ende, sondern – ganz im Gegenteil – auf einen neuen Anfang. Gemeinsam werden wir den Weg in eine Circular Economy fortsetzen.“
In der abschließenden Podiumsrunde reflektierten die Verantwortlichen der am Prosperkolleg beteiligten Organisationen sowie Reinhold Rünker, Hauptansprechpartner im fördergebenden Ministerium (MWIKE.NRW), abschließend die Erfolgsfaktoren der Transformationsarbeit.

Onderzoek over verduurzaming textiel

Onlangs ging de wetgeving ‘Uitgebreide Producenten Verantwoordelijkheid (UPV) Textiel’ in Nederland van start. Met deze wet zijn producenten verantwoordelijk voor een passend innamesysteem voor het recyclen en hergebruiken van kleding en huishoudtextiel, en voor het financieren van het gehele systeem. Lees via de link meer over een interessant onderzoek door Fontys collega Saskia van Overbeek over het inzamelen en hergebruik van textiel. Doel is om tot bruikbare vormen van samenwerking tussen inwoners, bedrijven, gemeente en andere stakeholders te komen. Ook interessant voor de Euregio.
ESC on the go!

After the kick-off meeting in January 2023, ESC is gaining speed now. More and more of our partners are becoming actively involved. The first Dutch and German students are working within our Living Labs, the research agenda is starting to be brought into practice, we organised an inspiring cross-border event about climate adaptation and we are already making plans for a follow up project of the ESC.
Besides that the ESC already gained public attention in the Netherlands and Germany: people know how to find us through our website and social media which has resulted in new interesting colaborations and publications.
With the summer approaching we want the seeds that we have planted in the first half year of ESC to start blooming fully. We will do this by organizing inspiration events for companies in so called CSRD workshops together with our Dutch and German partners, by intensifying the research together with Dutch and German students in the Living Labs, by setting up a cross-border CIRCO Track in which companies can work together on setting up circular practices and by bringing our research agenda into full practice, joined by students and researchers.

Unlocking the circular potential of the border region

Recently, research groups at Fontys Venlo have joined forces to develop a common research agenda within the field circular economy. One of the common research topics focusses on building a cross-border community of practice for Circular Manufacturing in which participants can learn from each other.
This theme fits close to the goals of the ESC, in which after summer we will start organising CSRD workshops (about the new EU Corporate Sustainable Reporting Directive) for companies at both sides of the border. These workshops can be used as a stepping stone towards the Dutch/German communities of practice around more specialized topics like e.g. CO2 reporting, remanufacturing, circular supply chains and digital product passports.
The aim of this action-research is to map the circular (or remanufacturing) potential within the Dutch-German border region, to exchange knowledge and practices between companies and business associations and to define and unlock the regional potential for new circular material flows.

On the way to a DIY sensor box

The Living Lab Healthy Spaces is currently prototyping a sensor box to be assembled by pupils in schools, using digital fabrication tools such as a laser cutter. These boxes will be placed in classrooms, together with the installation of a green wall, to help us find out which physical factors, such as temperature and air quality, affect the performance of the pupils, and how does the green wall affect these measurements. The sensor box will be placed in schools in the Netherlands and Germany. We will of course be happy to share the results later.

Research DWL-WOLF GmbH

Students of the Living Lab Circular Manufacturing are doing research at the company DWL-WOLF GmbH to make their production process more sustainable. This company also produces insulation material for the steel industry. The students take a closer look at the entire production process of this material and then talk to the customer about prioritizing the improvement projects. What are the quick wins and which sustainability steps can best be taken afterwards and why.
This project is partly realized with the help of Armin Möller of WFG Kreis Viersen. More news about this project will follow.
